How the Next Generation of Industry Professionals Will Help Solve the Construction Labour Shortage

EXCERPT — “Despite boots on the ground, cranes in the sky and major project activity happening across the province, the future of the construction industry must diversify if it hopes to tackle an industry-wide labour shortage expected to increase over the next decade.

“According to BuildForce Canada’s Construction & Maintenance Looking Forward report, an estimated 8,700 workers, or 28% of Nova Scotia’s 2020 labour force, are expected to retire over the next 10 years. The construction industry in Nova Scotia employs more than 30,000 workers and generates close to $6 billion in economic activity each year.

“While the current outlook may appear daunting, there are many opportunities that will help alleviate the projected labour shortage – something CANS is hoping to help with through its Building Futures for Youth program.”
